What is the purpose of a retirement community?

The goal of a retirement community is to help you or a loved one maintain or improve quality of life, ensuring a comfortable, satisfying living experience while maximizing independence and peace of mind.

One of the biggest benefits of a retirement community is the flexibility it offers and some of the outstanding amenities it offers. You can choose services and options as you need them: for example, a senior with an arm injury may need rehabilitation services for a few weeks. The retirement community team members can arrange personal support services on an as-needed basis. If a senior decides to move from an independent living lifestyle to a higher level of support, the great thing is that a physical move isn’t always necessary—the additional services may already be available depending on the residence you choose, providing peace of mind and fewer worries about future care. What is the difference between Independent Living and Assisted Living?

Independent Living is a retirement living option designed for seniors aged 55 and over who are able to live independently and require little or no assistance with daily living activities. Independent Living is perfect for the active adult who is self-sufficient but may need additional services or want to enjoy occasional meals provided by the residence.

Assisted Living is a retirement living option designed for seniors aged 55 and over who may require additional services, assistance with daily living or assistance preparing meals. Assisted Living may be the right choice if an individual needs a little more support with any of the following daily living activities.

  • Bathing
  • Grooming
  • Mobility
  • Dressing
  • Incontinence care
  • Changing care needs

Assisted living vs long term care

Assisted Living is for seniors that need a little more support with daily living activities.

Seniors who require the specialized environment provided in a long-term care home often have complex, chronic health conditions, frequently including dementia. Typically seniors that reside in long term care have higher care needs then of someone in assisted living.

Because long term care is government funded and controlled, the care costs often change from province to province.

To get into a long-term care community, you must undergo a provincial health assessment, which determines the care for which you qualify.

How do you find the right retirement community?

If you’ve had the discussion with your loved one about moving to a retirement community and they’ve made their decision, it’s time to start planning next steps. To make sure they find the best retirement living community suited to their needs and preferences, it’s important to do extensive research on your options. Whether the arrangement is for someone seeking an independent living environment with an active lifestyle, or for a senior who requires more assistance with activities of daily living in assisted living, the search may take some time for the right retirement community.

Questions to ask when looking for the right retirement community

Make sure to ask questions while you and your loved one are taking tours of prospective retirement communities. Some questions we recommended:

  • Ask to stay for a meal to sample the food
  • Ask if the community offers flexible dining options
  • Ask to see a full schedule of recreational activities
  • Ask residents about their experiences living there
  • Ask what happens if your loved one’s health deteriorates
  • Ask for samples of admission paperwork, menus, and newsletters
  • Ask to see stairwells and less travelled areas to ensure they are clean and well-maintained
  • Ask what is included with the monthly fees

On the other hand, it is also important to make sure the retirement community of your choice has amenities to promote social interaction and an active lifestyle, based on the needs of your loved one. Ask questions such as:

  • What amenities do you offer?
  • Can I see a full schedule of recreational activities?
  • How can my loved one remain physically active here?
  • Are there any off-site activities or outings that my loved one can get involved in?
